Literature Text

once upon a time when the world was still new,
all things were still.

the earth that my brother created
was a block,
a sphere carved from the hollow of his cheek
that he set down
unfurled
& dusted off
beneath our feet.

and though

all space lived in stasis,
all stasis lived in space,

the whole lot of us revolved
around a block of earth and the words of one brother.

when things changed,
we set the sun in the sky

with my sister's light
and my neverending folly.

luck spun the sky and then things changed.

the earth now moves
and we creatures,
vile as we are,
remain static.

the earth revolves around the sun,
in this world that is becoming old.
my brother's love circles my sister's sorrow

and all i am,
all i remain to be,
is the bad luck
that left us cold.
a piece from a bit ago, written when mandate was still going. i was just going through stuff and decided i really liked this one-- if only for the line my brother's love circles my sister's sorrow.

enjoy.

Mm, I remember this. I love that it has all the grandness of an origin myth but is still about self-blame or self-loathing, which has nothing grand about it. It's a shame mandate died so young; I really enjoyed reading it while it was still going.
